Rāhui Day 42 (44): two days in a row with no new infections and no deaths which, looking at the rest of the world, is pretty bloody amazing. There are seven counties that have populations of between five and six million as we do and their statistics – as of 6 May – are:
Denmark 9,821 infections and 503 deaths
Norway 7,904 infections and 214 deaths
Finland 5,412 infections and 246 deaths
Slovakia 1,421 infection and 25 deaths
New Zealand 1,486 infections and 20 deaths
Congo 236 infections and 10 deaths
Costa Rica 742 infections and 6 deaths
Palestine 366 infections and 2 deaths
The latter three have poor testing and reporting regimes.
The top three are truly frightening.
Yes, the data is imperfect because it’s changing daily, sometimes hourly, but the trends are clear. Regardless of how the US spins it, or who it blames, the figures tell a horrifying tale of incompetent leadership: 1.3m infections and 70k+ deaths. The projections are holding true.
It also doesn’t matter what conspiracy theory you currently support or how your irrational girly hatred of the Prime Minister causes YOU health-challenging conniptions, the fact is, we’re doing OK – and the government has, by and large, done an excellent job.
Credit where it’s due.
