Lockdown: Rāhui Day 26

Rāhui Day 26 (28): Had difficulty connecting the comms apps on my Methuselah autographed work laptop and a replacement was organised within no time.

Not delivered yet – couriers are swamped.

A loose-endsie sort of day during which I slowly crumpled under ‘flu-like symptoms, outcome of the jab I guess.

Finished a lot of tasks before tuning into ‘The Jacinda and Ashley Show’ at 4pm. Super impressed with the balance achieved between science, analysis, community need, and compassion, and proof that these seemingly divergent pressures are not necessarily incompatible. A good decision, well communicated, followed by the usual frenzy of fishwives screeching ‘pick me, pick me’.

Again, impressed by the patience shown by J and A as they worked responsibly through the necessary media questions while we at home threw soft objects at the screen.

Cushla shopped while I dish-washed which meant a lovely dinner on pristine plates followed by treats. Watched the news and was pleased to hear so many people from all walks of lockdown life in support of the slightly extended time on Level 4.

Searched for Alice Roberts, Janina Ramirez or Mary Beard on the History Channel but it’s all re-runs of world wars in the lead-up to the ANZAC anachronism and I’ve, frankly, had quite enough of that. There was even a doco on how shitty jungle warfare was and I certainly didn’t need any reminder of that! There’s that smell that never seems to quite go away. Cordite, Mould, and putrid flesh.

The US seems to be imploding – who would have anticipated that (she mutters sarcastically) – with the potential for a religious civil war lurching over the horizon heralded by Confederate flags, Nazi banners, AR15s and shouts of ‘give me Liberty or give me death’. It’s especially horrifying to note that Washington seems to be welcoming the idea with ‘opening the economy’ the absolute priority.

History, if we have one, will not be kind to the Trump Administration, and good riddance. Increasingly unwell, I staggered off to bed and had an unhappy night until 4am when things started to settle a bit.

Thinking of you all and feeling the need to walk today.
