Here’s the thing: fundamentalist Christian hate group Family First are obsessed with who uses what toilet. This campaign attacks people whose gender is in conflict with what they were assigned at birth, people who live authentic lives in their true gender and are not a threat to anyone else using the bathroom.
Family First base their campaigns on scripture but nowhere in the New Testament of the bible are transpeople mentioned and who uses what toilet doesn’t seem to be an issue for Jewish people alive 2000 years ago.
The Messianic Old Testament talks about rituals associated with latrine use – what hand to use, how to avoid being seen by others, and issues of purity and impurity – but stops well short of suggesting that there are specific places for male and female ablutions.
Archeological research tells us that toilet use is generic and while the rituals and protocols are very specific, who goes where isn’t an issue. In fact, there is no evidence of male/female public use toilet separation anywhere on the planet until 1700 and until mid to late 19th century in the US.
Even then, the reasons were more associated with the perceived emancipation of women and the role we began to play in what had previously been an all-male domain – a woman’s place is in the home – than for any biblical imperative. Yet Family First choose to be vile to, and about, transpeople and the public space toilets they use and with no reason apart from a hatred of difference and a minority community which is seen to be an easy target. Maybe it’s worth remembering that the policies of a university around safety and authenticity are determined by a combination of law and by university policy and are actually not any business of hate group Family First at all.
So, Family First, mind your own damn business and do what your scripture tells you to do – love your neighbour and leave all that judgement shit to your God.
